No matter what markerters say, content will always be king. Without content, there would be nothing to tweet, re-blog, share or comment on. This is why websites are always searching for that sweet spot where a topic relevant to their business meets engagement that translates into views, clicks and more. But, what makes content compelling? Let’s take for example the famous quote from Winston Churchill: “Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.” Content creation is nearly the same thing, minus the aggression. It’s about relaying a message in a way that intrigues and gets the reader’s attention. Here are five ways to make your website content more compelling:

  1. Add a picture.According to studies, content with photos are more likely to generate impressions than content that is purely text. Ideally, there should be one photo every 350 words. That’s how easy to is to lose readers’ attention. It doesn’t matter if it’s original art, syndicated content, or stock photos — adding an image adds immense value to your blog post.
  2. Craft a powerful headline. Headlines are the first thing readers see — and some readers don’t even get past it. The average person browses through social media at such a fast pace that, if your title is simply not catchy enough, they would just scroll past it. Elements of a good headline include:
  1. A promise or solution. Ex. “How to book the cheapest flights without VPN.”
  2. Ex. “10 signs that you are experiencing burnout.”
  3. A threat. “10 things in your pantry that are making you break out.”
  4. “Why this hotel is on every travel blogger’s bucket list.”
  1. Use simple language. It’s easy to give in to the temptation of showing off your extensive vocabulary, but what would good would that do if it turns your readers off, or worse, leaves them entirely confused? When writing any type of content, it’s important to articulate your message in a clear and concise manner. Avoid using jargon, unless it’s an industry-specific blog and you are expecting only industry professionals to read it. Make it conversational, approachable, and most of all, understandable.
  2. Don’t dumb it down. Being simple doesn’t mean underestimating your reader. Whatever their reason for visiting your blog, whether that’s to be entertained or to get information, if they are savvy enough to find you, they are savvy enough to ascertain sophisticated content from fluff.
  3. Always deliver. Writing compelling content is equal parts trial-and-error and practice. Sometimes what you think will get thousands of views doesn’t even get 10 likes, but with consistent writing and posting, you will eventually get into the rhythm and serve your followers with the content they want and deserve.
